How ALCS Influenced Me: An Alum's Perspective

June 05, 2017
By Jacob Berggren

I was asked an interesting question as an alum of Abundant Life Christian School . . . how has ALCS influenced me, especially in my relationship with Jesus Christ.

This question stopped me.  It should seem like a quick and easy answer, but as I thought about it, I realized it was neither.  Being asked a question like this - how has ALCS has influenced me as a young man in Christ - is like asking a small child how it is they have life. The young child’s response would likely be similar to my response to how ALCS has influenced my life to be what it is now.

The simple answer would be . . . I do not exactly know how, just that it did influence me. The small boy likely would respond giving two clearer reasons of how he understood himself to have life. First, he knows he is alive because of some person, his Mommy. Secondly, he also knows that he is alive because when he was born his mommy had someone help him stay alive. These two simple factors are good illustrations of how I have life in me today.

I know that all of my being including my spirit, my will, my body, my soul and all my life has its existence only in the person of Christ. I do not fully understand how, but that is okay. I do not need to fully understand. I just know that I was blind, but now I see through the light of Jesus! I was dead, but now I am alive in the life of Christ!  I have life because of some person, Jesus.

The one true God has given me life! Furthermore, I know that He has placed many people in my life not only to keep an eye on me but to point me more and more to Jesus who is my hope.  God has given me the great blessing of godly parents, a loving family, and faithful friends who constantly train and sharpen me in Christ.  In addition to these great investors in my life I have had the incredible blessing of being a part of the ALCS family, who helped me stay alive.

ALCS has been very much like John the Baptist to me in my walk with the Lord. My family at ALCS has been constantly preparing in me the way for Christ to touch my heart and transform my life for His glory. From the administration to the faculty to the staff to the students and parents, the ALCS family have faithfully been the ones to say, “Look, the lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).  ALCS and its servant-leadership has not only taught me how, but has exemplified what it means to love God with all of my heart, soul, mind and strength and what it looks like to love my neighbor as myself. Through its investment in my life, ALCS has taught me not only what it looks like to profess faith in Christ, but has shown even more so through the character and integrity of each individual in leadership and service what it means to live a life of faith partnered with a life of love.

Powerfully, ALCS has also shown what it looks like to worship the Lord in excellence. Someone once said that “The Christian shoemaker does his Christian duty not by putting little crosses on the shoes, but by making good shoes, because God is interested in good craftsmanship.” ALCS and the committed team and family that serve here have trained me to represent the Lord with love, faith, integrity, and excellence. I praise God for every person at ALCS - past, present, and future.  Those who serve at ALCS are answering God’s call on their lives and in doing so overflow His love, grace, mercy, wisdom, and goodness to us as students.  We see 1 Peter 4:10 lived out loud as our teachers and administration use the gifts they have from the Lord to serve others; they are “faithful stewards of God’s grace”!  I am especially grateful for those who have invested and/or shared with me part of their life so I may not only become the man in Christ I am now, but that I may become the man in Christ that I am created to be.

My prayer for my ALCS family comes from Numbers 6:24-26:

‘“The Lord bless you
    and keep you;
25 the Lord make his face shine on you
    and be gracious to you;
26 the Lord turn his face toward you
    and give you peace.”

Lastly, if you are considering having your child attend ALCS, I can only encourage you to enroll.  Join our family and you will see God’s faithfulness again and again as your child grows into the young man or woman God created him or her to be!

All for His kingdom and glory,
