ALCS Chapter of the National Honor Society Induction Chapel

December 14, 2017
By Miss Barbie

Every year, the ALCS Chapter of the National Honor Society Induction Chapel is special for it is a time to honor those who have earned a place in honor society while giving us all a chance to fulfill God’s word and rejoice with them in their honor (1 Corinthians 12:26; Romans 12:15).

One of the highlights each year is that as each student is being inducted into NHS, Miss Painter, the ALCS NHS Advisor, shares comments from teacher recommendations for that student. What a joy it is to hear about the quality of the character of each student! We learn about their leadership, service, and character through those words and it encourages us all to our best.

The current officers of NHS assisted with the induction and welcomed the new members. President Ashlen took a few moments to present the 2017-18 service theme for the year: Unto the Uttermost Part of the Earth!

The theme comes from Acts 1:8 (KJV) which says, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

NHS’ goal is to make an impact on peoples’ lives here in Madison, in our nation, and on the ‘earth’ as called to by this verse. To that end, they have activities planned to partner with Second Harvest Foodbanks and impact Madison by hosting a food drive to reduce hunger. To widen the impact to our nation, they are partnering with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to fight against blood cancers as they raise funds through class penny wars. Finally, to impact the world, it starts with impacting one village with a water filtration system to provide clean water to the community. NHS is determining who they will partner with for this project, but it is an exciting one! In one final act of service, NHS will continue its tradition of having middle and high school buddy up with elementary to make valentines to send to our military.

At this year’s chapel, Mr. Butler shared the definition of honor as defined by Webster’s Dictionary and how the Bible describes honor (Psalms 62:7 & John 12:26). He discussed what honor is and how it applies to not just our honor society students, but to all.  Using Biblical wisdom about where honor comes from (Proverbs 15:33 & Proverbs 29:33), Mr. Butler discussed how we live out honor in our relationships (Exodus 20:12 & Proverbs 3:9). Most importantly, Mr. Butler encouraged our honor society members and all students to make sure that once they have attained honor to take care and keep it, preserve it. All students were encouraged to continue developing their character, a God-honoring character that reflects Him to others, and to engage in service to be God’s hands and feet here on Earth.

The 2017-18 ALCS Chapter of the National Honor Society returning members are: Ashlen (12th), Hannah (12th), Lexi (12th), Matthew (12th), Flynn (12th), Billy (12th), and Boomer (11th).

We welcome our inductees: Aaron (11th), Lauren (11th), Nathan (10th), Maeya (10th), Beth-el (10th), Connor (10th), Alexis (10th), Emma (10th), and Ryan (10th).
