Carnation Sale Ends February 1

January 31, 2012
By Barbara Wiers

ALCS Annual Freshman Class

Carnation Sale Ends Tomorrow!

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching and the Freshman Class is wrapping up their sale of  carnations for that special day!  The class is offering red, pink, and white carnations and you can choose to order a single flower, a ½ dozen, or a dozen for the special child or children in your life.  Here’s a great way to make Valentine’s Day special while supporting the students in 9th grade!

Single flowers are $2 each; a ½ dozen is $11; and a dozen beautiful carnations is only $21!!

To help save you $$, the Freshman Class notes that a ½ dozen or dozen does not have to be for the same person, so you can split up the order and bless many with a flower.

The Freshman Class is selling until tomorrow, Wednesday, February 1,

and the flowers will be delivered on Tuesday, February 14.

If you would like to purchase flowers to send to your child, or if they would like to send flowers to their teacher, friends, or family members, simply fill out an order form and send it back to their teacher in an envelope with the appropriate amount of money – make sure to fill out the information and write a message (fold the card so that the picture is on the front, the information on the back, and the message inside).  If you want to use your own card, please attach the information to that card.   If you are sending flowers to more than one person, please fill out one order form per recipient.

Click HERE to go to the ALCS website and download an order form.  OR, stop by the Main Office at the school and pick up a form.

Remember:  the last day to order flowers is tomorrow, Wednesday, February 1.

Thank you for your support!

Jam the Gym: So Much Fun!

January 24, 2012
By Barbara Wiers

I think you know that I haven't been at Abundant Life Christian School all that long, but I have been here long enough to attend a Jam the Gym night . . . what fun!!

I had a 'date night' with my nephew Gus who is in first grade.  We went to dinner and then came to the game.  It was such a fun night spending focused time with him and cheering on the girls' basketball team as they played.  I don't remember if we won the game or not, but I do remember the time Gus and I spent together talking over dinner, watching the game and explaining aspects of the it to him, and laughing at the crazy antics of the elementary kids as they played a shoot-out game during half-time.

In the end, isn't that what it's all about . . . the time we spend with those we love?  Especially, when spending time together is so much fun!

This Friday night, ALCS is hosting Jam the Gym for our elementary students to come and have fun at the high school boys' basketball game . . . bring the family, cheer on the high school boys, nosh on concession food, laugh with the kids, and - most importantly - make some great memories!

See you at the game . . . let's Jam the Gym!

Come Visit River City with Us in April!

January 18, 2012
By Barbara Wiers

“You pile up enough tomorrows, and you'll find you are left with nothing but a lot of empty yesterdays. I don't know about you, but I'd like to make today worth remembering.”

- Prof. Harold Hill from Meredith Willson’s The Music Man

Hard to believe how fast January is flying by - it felt like we just started audition workshops and auditions for the spring musical and here we are getting ready to begin rehearsals!

Everyone at ALCS is excited about our spring musical this year!  Why?  It’s the iconic Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man!!  What a beloved show . . . wonderful story, wonderful music, and – of course – a real live boys’ band!

[personal note:  for the sake of total transparency, I must note the following - I absolutely ADORE Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man!!  If you haven’t seen it live or at least one of the movie versions, I would highly encourage you to do so.  My favorite version is the Robert Preston/Shirley Jones version from 1962, but the Matthew Broderick/Kristen Chenoweth version from 2003 is good as well.  Don’t miss the fun of River City, Iowa, and its colorful citizens (oh how I laugh when Mrs. Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn and Mayor Shinn are on stage) along with the wonderful songs like “Seventy Six Trombones,” “Ya Got Trouble (Right Here in River City),” “Goodnight, My Someone,” “Pick-a-Litte, Talk-a-Little,” “Marian the Librarian,” “The Wells Fargo Wagon,” “Shipoopi,” and “Gary, Indiana.”  This show has it all . . . laughs, fun, spirit, romance, and a sweet lesson about love’s redemptive power; it won’t change your world, but it will certainly lighten the burden of it for one night.  Come join us in River City for fun!]

Our directors – Pastor Sarah Karlen and Mrs. Carmen Risi – were hoping to generate enough interest to fill some 30 roles.  They had 65 students attend auditions!  Wow!!  Happily, they were able to work with the number of roles and were able to cast almost everyone.  We are truly blessed to have so much talent and so much interest in drama here at ALCS.

We are also excited to let you know that for this year’s musical we have partnered with the FLAME Home school Group (Families Learning Art and Music Education).  We look forward to building this relationship with FLAME to enhance the education and social network of both our students and theirs.  We are happy to have some FLAME students joining us for the spring musical.

All Family Meeting

January 05, 2012
By Barbara Wiers

Tonight - January 5 - at 6pm in the City Church Sanctuary

As you know we are moving further along in the consolidation process as we combine Abundant Life Christian and High Point Christian Schools.

Tonight is our all family meeting to share the latest with you regarding the consolidation.  This meeting is extremely important and we hope that all families will attend.

Tonight we will discuss the consolidation with High Point Christian School, introduce Diann Cook, HPCS Principal, as well as look at re-enrollment, tuition/fees, scholarships, etc.  A question and answer time will also be provided.

If you have child care concerns, please feel free to bring your children with you.

Again, please join us tonight for the ALCS All Family Meeting so that you know the latest in the consolidation happenings.  As we have said previously, we are committed to open, honest, and transparent communication about the process and our goal is to keep you informed at every step of the process so you know what is occurring and how it affects you and your child.

If you have any questions, please contact me at bwiers@mail.alcs.us.  See you tonight!

PS:  We invite you to 'cross the parking lot' and head over to the Main Gym and cheer on the High School Boys Basketball team as they take on Rio tonight at 7:30p . . . it's a full night of activities at ALCS!

Happy New Year!

January 03, 2012
By Barbara Wiers

Happy New Year!

2012 is upon us and it promises to be an exciting and adventuresome year!  As we move through this year, we will be laying the foundation  for our consolidation with High Point Christian School and begin putting in place the stepping stones that we believe God will use for greater things in this city and region for Christian education.  We trust and pray that all we do will be for the King of King's glory and to enlarge the Kingdom of God!

Beyond the process of consolidation, we are fully into this school year and still have so much still to do!  I was blessed to join our elementary students today as they began the day and the new year with a Worship Chapel!  Wow!!  What a wonderful way to come back to school - recharged and reenergized - with a time to focus on God and how wonderful He is!!

Mrs. Cathy Stevens, our elementary art teacher, was the guest speaker and she shared her passion for worshipping with banners and flags.  She let us all know how and why she became involved with banners and how she uses them along with the Biblical basis for the banners.  Then, any student who wished had the opportunity to try a banner while Mrs. Risi led us in a variety of worship songs.

Worship Chapel is a wonderful time to connect with the Lord & it is a blessing to the spirit to hear the voices of our elementary students raised in praise to the only one truly worthy of it.

If you are ever free between 8:30a-9:30a on a Tuesday morning, please join us for our Elementary Chapel and be blessed by the speaker, the music, the students, and the Lord . . . you are always welcome!
